Dan Aldridge MP has welcomed the publication of the Government’s landmark Water White Paper, describing it as the biggest overhaul of the water system in a generation and a major step forward for Weston-super-Mare’s coastline and waterways.

The reforms will create a stronger single regulator with tougher powers to hold water companies to account. For the first time in two decades, a Chief Engineer will sit inside the regulator to provide hands-on technical oversight, ending what critics have described as years of water companies “marking their own homework” while infrastructure deteriorated.

A new “MOT-style” system of checks will require regular health inspections of pipes, pumps and critical assets, allowing problems to be identified early rather than waiting for failures that lead to leaks, shortages or pollution incidents.

The White Paper also introduces a new Performance Improvement Regime, giving the regulator powers to intervene quickly where companies fall short, protecting customers, the environment and ensuring long-term investment.

Alongside stronger enforcement, households will benefit from a wider rollout of smart water meters and mandatory efficiency labels on appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines, measures expected to save families more than £125 million in water and energy bills over the next decade.

The reforms build on action already taken, including the recent ban on plastic wet wipes, and place greater emphasis on preventing pollution at source through sustainable drainage, better rainwater management and tackling sewer misuse.

Dan Aldridge, MP for Weston-super-Mare said:

“For too long, water companies have been allowed to get away with poor performance while our coastline and waterways have paid the price. People in Weston care deeply about clean water, it’s part of our identity as a seaside town.

“This White Paper delivers the tough oversight and real accountability our community has been calling for. No more marking their own homework. No more excuses.

“Introducing proper ‘MOT’ checks on infrastructure and putting a Chief Engineer inside the regulator means problems will be spotted before they turn into pollution or disruption.

“This is about protecting our coast, restoring trust, and making sure families get the service they deserve.”

The Government says the reforms will ensure water companies plan for the long term, prioritise prevention, and deliver a system fit for the future.
