Locking Primary School praised by Ofsted

“Pupils flourish socially, emotionally and academically in caring, inclusive Locking Primary School” according to a Ofsted report that was released this week

 

Following a visit from Ofsted on 16 June 2026, Locking Primary School has been praised for its high standards across safeguarding, leadership, inclusion and pupil development.

 

Ofsted Inspectors confirmed that safeguarding standards are fully met, noting that leaders have “established an open culture in which safeguarding is everyone's responsibility” and that “pupils are made safer and feel safe.”

 

Early Years was highlighted as one of the strongest areas of the school. Inspectors praised the vibrant environment and highly effective teaching that maximises opportunities to develop children’s knowledge, particularly in language and early reading. They noted that “2yr olds use accurate vocabulary… Children in Reception independently use their phonic skills when retelling stories.”

 

Locking was recognised as a school that welcomes all children, with an ambitious and comprehensive vision for inclusion — a standout theme throughout the report. Inspectors wrote that “pupils thrive and play a full and active role in all aspects of school life.”

 

Treetops, the school’s resource base for children with moderate learning difficulties, was described as highly effective and well resourced. Staff use specialist knowledge, alongside the views of professionals, parents and carers, to adapt learning activities and meet pupils’ individual needs.

 

The report also celebrates pupils’ wider personal development. Inspectors enjoyed hearing pupils perform their British values “rap” with enthusiasm and noted how calmly children move around the school and settle quickly into learning. They praised pupils’ courtesy, respect and character development, writing: “They develop their aspirations for the future by listening to adults talk about different careers in assemblies. Pupils build their character by raising money for local charities which in turn develops their understanding of money, budgets and cost.”

 

Executive Headteacher Roxanne Simpson spoke proudly of the Locking community: “This report reflects what we know to be true about our school: that it is a place where children belong and thrive, staff are passionate about their work, and families are valued part of their child's education journey - we are a family! We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the extraordinary commitment of our Locking family!”

 

Extend Learning Academies Network (ELAN) is a group of North Somerset primary schools, nurseries and preschools situated at Banwell, Bournville, Locking, Oldmixon, Mead Vale, Mendip Green, Milton Park, Walliscote and Windwhistle.
