The planning application for a new McDonald's branch at the Weston Business Park on Locking Moor Rd has been rejected by North Somerset Council.
The refusal based on its proximity to nearby schools received strong opposition from local residents when it was first proposed. Since the planning application was announced there were 241 consultation responses with 194 objecting the application.

Cllr Ciaran Cronnelly, Labour councillor for Winterstoke ward on North Somerset Council and leader of Weston Town Council said; "I had raised your concerns as part of the planning process and I'd met McDonald's to specifically discuss residents' feedback about the scheme and concern around the proximity to schools."
"Planning applications are often nuanced they are rarely black and white and you'll always find a mix of views, but I agree with the planning department's decision. I believe it's the right decision particularly as the national planning policy framework is clear that local authorities should refuse applications where hot food takeaways are within walking distance to a school."
It's possible McDonald's could appeal the decision but we'll have to wait and see"
Local residents views on the decision were mixed. Jayne Lane said "Fantastic news!! The last thing we need is another McDonald’s adding to the obesity crisis" and Heath Brindley said "Sounds like a good decision going on the queue of kids at the McDonald’s right next to Priory school just before going in time, and just after chucking out".
However Christopher Hayes said; "it will just get over turned at appeal stage as other people have said are the other fast food establishments going to be closing down because they are within walking distance… no I don’t think they will be anytime soon"
