Weston-super-Mare Town Council has launched a new section of its website dedicated to community asset transfers, providing residents with a central place to find information, follow progress and stay informed as plans develop.

Weston-super-Mare Town Council and North Somerset Council are working together to explore the transfer of selected local assets and responsibilities. Potential transfers may include play areas, green spaces and community facilities, helping to ensure decisions about these valued local spaces are informed by local knowledge and community priorities.

The transfer of community assets is a long-term process that will take place in phases over the coming years. Not every asset will transfer, and each opportunity will be carefully assessed to ensure it is in the best interests of residents and represents good value for the town.

Councillor Ciaran Cronnelly, Leader of Weston-super-Mare Town Council, said:

"Over the past year, we have been working closely with North Somerset Council to develop the frameworks, processes and agreements needed to support the transfer of local assets and services. While much of this work has taken place behind the scenes, it has been essential in ensuring that any future transfers are sustainable, well-managed and deliver long-term benefits for our community.”

We are now beginning to see the first stages of delivery, starting with the transfer of responsibility for 32 public litter bins across Weston-super-Mare. We are also finalising arrangements for the transfer of eight play areas and a number of small green spaces.

This is the beginning of a phased programme that will develop over the coming years. Not all assets will transfer from North Somerset Council. Each opportunity will be carefully assessed to ensure it is right for the town and represents the best use of public resources."

Mike Bell, Leader of North Somerset Council, said:

“Through our Local Devolution programme, we are creating new ways for communities to play a more direct role in shaping the places that matter most to them. Working closely with Weston Town Council, and other Town and Parish councils,  we’re building a shared approach that keeps decision-making rooted in local knowledge while safeguarding the long-term future of important community spaces.

This is about finding the right balance - supporting town and parish councils that want to take on a greater role, while continuing to provide services where they do not. Each potential transfer is carefully considered to ensure it is practical, sustainable and delivers real value for residents.

Our partnership with Weston reflects what Local Devolution is all about: collaboration, flexibility and a commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for communities over time. We’re pleased to be continuing this work together as the programme develops.”

The Town Council is committed to keeping residents informed throughout the process and ensuring there are opportunities to learn more as projects progress.

The new webpages will provide regular updates throughout the programme and include:

• Updates on community asset transfers and project progress

• Opportunities for residents to learn more and share feedback

• Frequently Asked Questions
