North Somerset Community Scrapstore to close citing costs and funding pressures

The scrapstore that has operated from multiple sites over the years and is currently based on Gazelle Rd in Weston-super-Mare, will close in July citing

A spokesperson for North Somerset Community Scrapstore said;

“It’s with huge sadness that we need to inform you that the community Scrapstore will be shutting its doors for good in July.

As with many other community organisations, our costs have continued to rise, funding is harder and harder to find and so, sad as it is, we’ve decided, it’s time to call it a day.

We know this may come as a shock to many of you and we hope you, especially those that have visited recently, understand why we’ve been unable to share this until now- partly as we were still hopeful to find a solution. It is however, just not achievable.

It has been an absolute honour to serve our community here in North Somerset for almost 13 years and many of you have become not just customers but friends over the years.

We have loved watching families grow, events established and groups formed, we’ve loved seeking resources to support you and the variety of activities we’ve been able to support has inspired us to carry on year after year. It’s been an absolute pleasure to see our community committed to increase its reuse and inspire new generations to think creatively when planning their offerings.”

Cllr Ciaran Cronnelly whose council ward the Community Scrapstore is located in said;

“I'm genuinely really sorry to read this, and this will be a huge loss to the community. These things are incredibly emotional but I want the volunteers and staff to know they should be very proud of all the effort they've put into the scrap store over the years - they really are the best of us.

It would be such a shame to see this go and I'm committed to helping where I can - I have written to two members of North Somerset Council's Cabinet for help with finding a space, grants etc which I'm waiting for a response back.”
