Residents encouraged to report hate crime during Hate Crime Awareness Week

Residents across North Somerset are encouraged to stand together against hate crime and report incidents during Hate Crime Awareness Week (10-17th October).
North Somerset Council's Safer Communities Service is raising awareness of what hate crime is, how it affects individuals and communities, and the support available to those affected.
This year's Hate Crime Awareness Week theme is solidarity with those affected by hate crime, with a particular focus on refugees and people seeking asylum. The Safer Communities Service is now encouraging residents to stand alongside those who may experience prejudice, hostility or discrimination, and to help foster communities where everyone feels safe, respected and welcome.
A hate crime is any criminal offence perceived by the victim or another person to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person's race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, transgender identity or other protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.
While some people may dismiss hateful behaviour as "just words", hate crime can have a significant and lasting impact on victims, their families and wider communities. Anyone who experiences or witnesses hate crime is being encouraged to report it.
Reports can be made to Avon and Somerset Police by calling 101, online, or by calling 999 in an emergency if someone is in immediate danger. Residents can also seek support and information through local organisations, council services and community partners.
Councillor Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council's Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places said:
"Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community. Hate crime has no place in North Somerset and can have a devastating impact on those targeted. This year's theme of solidarity reminds us that nobody should face hate alone. We stand with all those affected by hate crime, including refugees and people seeking asylum who may be particularly vulnerable to hostility and discrimination.
"By showing compassion, understanding and support, we can help ensure North Somerset remains a welcoming place for everyone. We know that the vast majority of people want their communities to be safe, welcoming and inclusive, and every day we see examples of kindness, compassion and neighbourliness that reflect the very best of our area...."
