The South West has been cautioned that a sharp fall in temperatures could result in an increase in deaths over the next week.

A cold weather health alert has been issued for the region from 8pm on Sunday, December 28 until 12pm on Monday, January 5.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said the cold spell could have a “significant” impact on health and social care services.

Falling temperatures are expected to pose a greater risk to elderly people and those with existing health conditions, particularly if they struggle to keep indoor temperatures at the recommended 18C.

The cold conditions may also disrupt delivery services and place additional pressure on remote healthcare provision.

Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud said the current settled but cold weather is set to change, with more unsettled and showery conditions bringing increased wintry hazards, especially in northern parts of the UK.

North Somerset Council has activated its SWEP protocol (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) which will see eligible rough sleepers provided with overnight accommodation in partnership with Somewhere To Go
