Marine Lake in Weston-super-Mare will undergo a series of temporary closures throughout the summer and autumn the council has announced.

The seafront lake in Weston-super-Mare, which dates back to the 1920s and reopened after a £1 million upgrade following its winter closure, will close from Monday to Thursday during the scheduled periods.

Further short-term closures are planned across the remainder of 2026 to allow essential maintenance work to take place, according to those managing the site.

The work will focus on inspecting and maintaining the lake’s sluice gates, with efforts made to avoid the peak school summer holiday period.

North Somerset Council, which owns and manages the lake with support from a team of volunteers, said the sluice gates require regular inspections to ensure they continue to operate effectively.

During the closures, the lake will be completely drained to enable routine maintenance, including the removal of debris from the gates. The closures will also allow overtopping tides to naturally clear some silt from the lake bed.

The council added that there are currently no plans to fully dredge the lake to remove silt and debris in the near future.

The lake will be closed on the following dates:

  • Monday 15 June to Thursday 18 June

  • Tuesday 14 July to Friday 17 July

  • Wednesday 9 September to Friday 11 September

  • Monday 12 October to Wednesday 14 October

  • Tuesday 24 November to Friday 27 November
