Weston-super-Mare’s Labour Councillors have reacted to the sudden resignation of the Prime Minister and leader of their party; Keir Starmer, after months of pressure towards his premiership, his reign of Prime Minister has ended off the back of disastrous local elections results across the country for the Labour Party.

A leadership election will not take place with a new Prime Minister in post by September.

The former Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham who recently battered Reform in the Makerfield by-election is expected to become the next Prime Minister.

Cllr Catherine Gibbons, leader of the Labour Group on North Somerset Council and Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council said;

“As a local councillor, I think it’s important to be honest that the local election results were very difficult for Labour. Voters were clearly sending a message, and we need to listen carefully, respond with humility, and respect what people are telling us.

I want to see a central government that properly supports local government to do its job. My focus will always be standing up for the communities here, and like councillors across the country, we need a government that understands local government and gives councils the tools, powers, and resources needed to deliver effectively for residents.

The speculation around Keir Starmer’s future and his resignation marks a significant and difficult moment for the Labour Party. Whatever people’s views of him, he led Labour back into government after 14 years in opposition.

I also believe important work has been done over the past two years that will matter in the long term, including stronger protections for workers and renters.

However, from conversations on the doorstep, people want government focused on the issues affecting their everyday lives — decent public services, affordable housing, secure jobs, and economic stability- And although there has been progress, including falling NHS waiting lists and significant investment coming into places like Weston, I understand why many people still feel frustrated and want change to be felt more directly in their day-to-day lives.

Labour was elected to bring stability, rebuild, and deliver, and that responsibility remains regardless of who leads the party going forward.”

I recognise that stepping down was a difficult decision for Kier Starmer, and one that he took believing that it is the best thing for the country.

We have to respect this - and look forward with hope”

Cllr Ciaran Cronnelly, leader of the Labour Group on Weston Town Council and councillor for Winterstoke Ward on North Somerset Council said;

“Events in Westminster do not change our focus here in Weston. The priorities of the Weston-super-Mare Town Council Labour Group remain exactly what they have always been: delivering for local residents.

We are committed to this town first and foremost - that hasn't changed, and it won't change regardless of who is the Prime Minister."

Cllr James Clayton, Labour councillor for South Ward on North Somerset Council & Councillor for Bournville on Weston Town Council said;

“As a local councillor in Weston-super-Mare, I welcome the decision for Keir Starmer to step aside. At the end of the day, people expect leadership they can trust, and when that confidence is lost, change has to happen.

That being said, it’s only fair to recognise some of the positive things Labour has helped deliver for Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding areas. We’ve seen investment in regeneration projects, improvements to the town centre, support for jobs and skills, and funding aimed at helping local communities. The Pride in Place funding for Bournville and nearby areas is a good example of investment that can make a real difference to neighbourhoods and local residents.

For me, politics has always been about getting things done for local people, not Westminster drama. My focus will stay on standing up for Weston, supporting residents, improving community safety, and making sure our town continues to get the investment and attention it deserves.”
