Weston-super-Mare Youth Council is working with local organisations to create an event focused solely on the youth - giving them the opportunity to perform on stage and delivering the resulting profits to a local charity aiming to support young people in their mental health.

The talent event, 'NextGen Spotlight', will take place in the Blakehay Theatre, which prides itself on being "at the centre of Weston's cultural life", and frequently delivers a range of performances, specifically showcasing local talent, with everything from tribute acts to brass concerts.

Scheduled to take place on the 27th September, from 2pm-4pm, tickets are already live on the theatre's website, costing £10, and including a complementary programme.

A representative from the Youth Council said: "We want the youth at the heart of everything that we do, and this year we decided to focus on the creative aspect, and put them centre stage, which will not only be a great opportunity for them, but it will showcase to adults what young people are capable of."

"This event will also enable the performers to have another amazing experience to put on their CV, if they choose to follow a career path in the creative arts."

To be given the opportunity to perform, any young talent aged 11-21 could apply to get involved, and it isn't just for musicians: anybody can apply if they have any experience in areas like comedy or magic. To be featured in the show, applicants have to email a video audition of up to five minutes, and the most promising talent will be selected by the Youth Council for the opportunity to be one of 10 acts in the two hour event.

The Youth Council is a group of young people supported by Weston Town Council who are passionate about making a difference and investing in the future of Weston. They are keen to support the youth in all areas, ranging from the environment to mental health. A spokesperson said: "We always welcome young people from all walks of life who want to make a difference, and we hope to expand our youth council along with the resulting positive change that it is having on the community."
