North Somerset Council’s New Hobby? Going Through Your Rubbish…

North Somerset Council has announced that staff at Weston-super-Mare recycling centre will soon begin opening and inspecting bags of rubbish to make sure residents are not disposing of recyclable materials incorrectly.

The new “bag sorting” policy forms part of a wider overhaul of waste services across the region. The council intends to introduce the scheme later this year at its recycling centres in Weston, as well as sites at Portishead, and Backwell.

Council officials say the initiative is aimed at reducing the amount of recyclable waste being placed into non-recyclable skips.

Specially designated “bag sorting areas” will be introduced, allowing staff to examine rubbish brought to the sites.

The council says the inspections are intended to educate residents about what items should be recycled.
