North Somerset Council has refreshed Weston-super-Mare's much‑loved Floral Clock with a new selection of hardy perennial plants designed to create a vibrant, attractive, and more sustainable display for the years ahead.
The replanting, completed today, focuses on climate‑resilient and low‑maintenance species to help the display cope better with increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. Last summer’s prolonged high temperatures and drought made regular watering challenging, despite the dedication of local volunteers who worked tirelessly to maintain the installation.
To future‑proof the Floral Clock, drought‑tolerant varieties such as Sempervivums and additional lavender have been introduced. These resilient plants not only withstand hotter, drier conditions but also provide lasting colour, texture, and visual appeal.
Cllr Mike Solomon, Cabinet Member for Culture, Community Services and Safety at North Somerset Council said:
“The Floral Clock is one of our most recognisable local landmarks, and it’s wonderful to see it refreshed with plants that will thrive in our changing climate. I want to thank all the volunteers whose dedication keeps this feature looking its best year after year. Their contribution is invaluable, and we warmly welcome anyone who would like to join them in helping care for this much‑loved community space.”
The project has been supported by a core group of committed volunteers who continue to play an essential role in caring for this iconic feature and its surrounding planters. Their efforts have been invaluable in delivering the refresh.
However, more volunteers are needed to support ongoing maintenance throughout the spring and summer months, ensuring the Floral Clock continues to thrive.
