Weston crime writer and scientist Brian Price will be giving a talk on Poisons in Fact and Fiction at the Campus Library, Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday 24th February at 7.30 pm.

People have been fascinated by poisons throughout the ages,’ said Brian, ‘and I will explain what poisons are and how they harm us. I will be discussing real-life poisoners, from the Borgias to the KGB, and also looking at how poisons have been used in literature, from Chaucer’s The Pardoner’s Tale to M.W. Craven’s The Botanist.’

Brian is a chemist and biologist by training and regularly advises other writers on crime science topics, from poisons and knockouts to body disposal and DNA. His advice to M.W. Craven, that he shouldn’t include the recipe for ricin in The Botanist, was reported as keeping the author out of jail (it is a serious offence to publish material likely to be of use to a terrorist).

He is the author of the DC Mel Cotton police thrillers, one of which, Fatal Dose, has its denouement in Weston.

He has also written a book of short stories – A Pocketful of Poisons – and a guide for authors on crime science (Crime writing: How to write the science).

The Campus event is free, with tickets available from https://brian-price-campus.eventbrite.co.uk
