Weston Independent News has learned that the former M&S has been purchased by a development company and that advertisements for renting the space were not authorised.
ABL Group who have purchased the store are a property investment group which specialises in conversions of unused commercial/office space and have successfully carried our multiple projects. They have a small portfolio which is forever growing and have around 15 companies that operate under the ABL Group.
In a statement to Weston Independent News, the ABL Group said;
“As the premises has been closed for a number of years our plans are to bring the property back in to use by maximising its potential as a retail space and to make use of the upper floors for some modern residential living.
Whilst it is early days, we have spoken with the council regarding the residential conversion to the upper floors and we are speaking to some national agents to find the best use for the retail space.
We have had some initial interest from some household High St brands and it may be that the ground floor is spilt in to 2/3 smaller units to accommodate maximum use.
In the interim we have a short-term occupier for the premises until we finalise our plans who will be selling clothing and footwear. We hope to be able to create a great multi use premises which would benefit people in Weston Super Mare.”
“We purchased the property recently as developers and were approached by an anonymous third party regarding the possibility of renting the space.
While that proposal was briefly under consideration, we decided not to proceed with what was being offered. Our intention is to redevelop the property instead.
For the avoidance of doubt, the individual brought to our attention is not connected to us in any way. They have never held a lease over the property and will not be granted one.
We understand that this person has been advertising or referring to the premises without authority. We have asked for those posts to be removed and wish to make clear that they have no involvement whatsoever in any letting or future use of the property”
North Somerset Council leader Mike Bell confirmed the sale and said the new owner is in touch with the council.
Cllr Mike Bell said:
"The former Marks & Spencer store in High Street and Regent Street, Weston-super-Mare has a new owner.
"The owner is in touch with the council and we’re already discussing with them their plans for the site.
"This is a really prominent site for Weston and it’s important that it’s developed in a way that contributes positively to the town centre and High Street.
"What is coming is unclear at the moment, but the High Street facing part only has planning permission for retail uses right now.
"I guess it’s a case of watch this space, but good to see signs of life on the building."
Weston Independent News has been unable to make contact with the persons who had been advertising rental space at the location.
