A new primary school accommodating 630 pupils is scheduled to open in Weston-super-Mare in 2026. Airfield Primary Academy will be developed by Persimmon Homes Severn Valley as part of the Haywood Village development, situated on the site of the former Weston Airfield.
The school will feature 21 classrooms, a nursery with 103 places, a school hall, and a community hub that includes studios and changing facilities. It will also incorporate sustainable technologies such as solar panels and air-source heat pumps.

The surrounding estate will include natural features like wildflower areas, insect hotels, potential beehives, and log-based habitats. This new school is part of Persimmon’s broader plan to build a total of 2,500 new homes within the development.
Claire Burton, managing director of Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, stated: "We are proud to appoint Willmott Dixon to deliver Airfield Primary Academy – a significant milestone in our commitment to fostering a vibrant, sustainable community at Haywood Village. This will be the second primary school we’ve established on-site, reflecting our ongoing investment in infrastructure that supports local families, enhances educational opportunities, and celebrates the area's heritage.
"Designed with innovation and eco-friendliness in mind, this school will serve future generations and become a central part of this expanding community."
The school’s name was selected by the Cabot Learning Federation, which has been appointed to operate the school. The name honors the site’s location and Weston’s aviation history.
Richard David, director at Willmott Dixon, commented: "We are excited to work alongside Persimmon on the development of Airfield Primary Academy at Haywood Village. With extensive experience delivering educational projects in the region, we are committed to providing a robust, sustainable environment where pupils can learn and flourish."
Currently, the Cabot Learning Federation manages six other schools in Weston-super-Mare, all rated as 'good' or 'outstanding' by Ofsted. The project received formal planning permission in September 2024.
