It might be April Fool’s Day but unfortunately this isn’t a joke for many residents. North Somerset Council’s tax hike of 8.99% will start today and is the joint highest increase in the country.

The rise, for which special permission from central government was required, will hit residents hard amongst an increasingly hard hitting cost of living crisis.

In data released by the government, the majority of local authorities are increasing council tax by 4.99%. However a number of other local authorities have also raised council tax by above this rate with Shropshire Council also levelling an increase of 8.99%.

On top of these changes, many local residents have become increasingly vocal over the reduction of services that have come in recent times such as a move to three-weekly bin collection from two and a new booking system at Weston-super-Mare Recycling Centre.

Jack Davis said;

“Higher council tax, less bins being collected, potholes everywhere, less police around, rising cost of living for a family of 5on average income is a struggle. Now you have caused more stress with higher tax, absolute joke”

and David Crossland said;

“Brilliant, we’ll all pay more for less - same ‘story’ different day. You can’t keep squeezing people forever, your liabilities are your problem. Speak to central government and push for changes (care). Try to represent the people you’re elected by!”
