Weston-super-Mare Town Council and North Somerset Council have announced an important milestone in the local Devolution programme (community asset transfer programme), with Weston-super-Mare Town Council now taking on the day-to-day management of eight local play areas from 6 July 2026.
The new arrangements mark the first phase of the Town Council's management of these much-loved community spaces while the legal process to transfer the freehold ownership of the sites is completed.

A spokesperson for Weston Town Council said: “Residents visiting the play areas may begin to notice Weston-super-Mare Town Council's Grounds Team carrying out inspections, maintenance and repairs, alongside the installation of new litter bins and Town Council signage over the coming weeks.
The Town Council will now be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the sites, including routine inspections, grounds maintenance, repairs and responding to any issues reported by residents.”
Councillor Ciaran Cronnelly, Leader of Weston-super-Mare Town Council, said: "This is a significant milestone for Weston-super-Mare and demonstrates the excellent partnership working that has taken place between the Town Council and North Somerset Council over the past year.
While much of the preparation has taken place behind the scenes, it has been essential in ensuring we are ready to take on these important community assets. We are delighted that our Grounds Team is now looking after these play areas on behalf of the people of Weston-super-Mare.
This is just the beginning of a phased programme, and we look forward to continuing to work with North Somerset Council as further opportunities arise over the coming years."
Councillor Mike Bell, Leader of North Somerset Council, said: “Local Devolution is now moving from planning into delivery, and this transfer shows what can be achieved through strong partnership working.
“By working closely with Weston-super-Mare Town Council, we have agreed a practical approach that allows the town council to manage these play areas locally while the legal transfer of ownership follows.
“This is about bringing local decision-making closer to residents and supporting the long-term care of spaces that matter to communities."
The play areas covered by the new management arrangements are:
• Diamond Batch (Weston Gateway)
• Thompson Way (West Wick)
• Walford Avenue (North Worle)
• Castle Batch MUGA (North Worle)
• Plumley (Weston Village)
• The Runway (Haywood Village)
• The Park (Jay View, Bournville)
• Shrubbery Park (Hillside)
