A spokesperson for Avon Fire & Rescue Service said:

“The A371 is now closed from The Runway to Banwell Road and is expected to remain closed for the foreseeable future, including during morning rush hour

Diversions are in place and we are asking people to minimise travel in the area where possible and plan ahead.

Please plan ahead, allow extra time for your journey and avoid the area where possible.

Firefighters will remain on scene for some time as they identify and deal with hotspots and continue damping down.

Smoke is still affecting the area. Local residents should continue to keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering homes or businesses.”

The fire comes just days after millions of people received a “severe alert” through the governments emergency alert scheme, urging people to be cautious as Britain continues to struggle with tinderbox like conditions.

A local resident said: “Parts of Locking Parklands are covered in smoke, we’ve received advice to shut doors and windows and police are on site too giving people this advice”
