Reception centre set up with bomb squad en-route and roads closed in Worle

Police have cordoned off a large area of Worle this afternoon after a search of a property uncovered “suspicious substances and items”.

An Exposive Ordnance Disposal Unit is en route to the scene and residents of homes within 100m of the property are not allowed to return home.

The following roads are within the cordoned area in Worle where access may be limited in some or all of the road:

Becket Road, Wesley Drive, Courtenay Walk, Becket Drive, Christian Close, The Larches, Cabot Way & Wynter Close

A spokesperson for Avon & Somerset Police said:

“As part of an ongoing investigation into fraud offences, officers have arrested a man, aged 70, on suspicion of fraud by false representation in Becket Road, in Worle near Weston-super-Mare, this afternoon (Wednesday 30 September).

During searches of the property, some suspicious substances and items were located.

As a precautionary safety measure, a 100m cordon has been put in place and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit is enroute to the scene.

A number of properties within the cordon have been evacuated and we are working with colleagues at the local authority to find a suitable location for those who have been displaced.

We will provide updates as they become available.”

A spokesperson for North Somerset Council said:

“A number of properties in and around Becket Road in Worle are currently affected by a 100-metre cordon put in place by Avon and Somerset Police as a precautionary measure.

If you live within the 100-metre cordon and cannot access your property, please either seek shelter with friends and family (if you are able to) or attend Castle Batch Children’s Centre where a reception centre has been set up.

If you need additional support such as access to medication or pets remain at home etc, please go to Castle Batch Children’s Centre where advice will be available.”
