A spokesperson for Avon & Somerset Police said;

We’re appealing for information following an incident shortly before 3pm yesterday as people were leaving Summer fest.

A taxi driver was subjected to racial abuse and assaulted by a man and a woman. Two members of the public—a 61-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man—who tried to help were also assaulted and suffered facial injuries.

Officers quickly attended and arrested a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman from Swindon on suspicion of racially aggravated assault. During the arrest, a female officer was assaulted, and the man was further arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

Both remain in police custody while we liaise with the CPS.

We want to reassure the community this was an isolated incident. Extra resources were in place for Summer fest, and we remain committed to keeping Weston-super-Mare a safe and inclusive space.
