North Somerset Council have welcomed their new Chief Executive who officially started her role today (Monday 18 August).

Mandy leaves Bath & North East Somerset Council as their Chief Operating Officer to join North Somerset and comes with a wealth of public sector experience having worked previously for Newport City Council and Bristol City Council.

No stranger to North Somerset Council, Mandy previously worked as an Assistant Director before leaving in 2018 to take up a new role at Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The appointment comes as North Somerset Council looks to work closer than ever with local communities and partners, is delivering a number of key projects that will bring real community and economic benefit and strengthen links with key partners such as the West of England Combined Authority Area.

Mandy will oversee a council who provides vital services for over 220,000 residents. This includes over 690 miles of roads, caring for over 1080 people in residential or nursing care and becoming a ‘corporate parent’ for over 270 children in care.

Proud to be a North Somerset resident, Mandy raised her family here and is very much part of the local community. She regularly enjoys North Somerset’s beautiful rural areas, seafronts, thriving economies while having accessed quality services such as local schools, leisure facilities and health services.

Mandy Bishop, Chief Executive of North Somerset Council said: “I feel very privileged to be joining the Council at such an exciting time and honoured to be working with such dedicated staff, councillors and communities. There’s lots to do and I’m definitely up for the challenge! It’s an exciting time to join as we’re delivering a number of key projects including the long-awaited Banwell Bypass, the Metrowest railway line from Portishead to Bristol, renovating Birnbeck Pier and the Tropicana, growing our economy and progressing devolution, where our aim is to join the West of England Combined Authority Area. As a North Somerset resident, I’m very ambitious for our area and want to continue to make it a great place to live, work and visit.”

Cllr Mike Bell, Leader of North Somerset Council said: “It’s great to welcome back Mandy Bishop to North Somerset Council as our new Chief Executive. Mandy’s passion for North Somerset shines through and it’s an important and pivotal time for us with a number of key projects we’re delivering as well as fantastic opportunities we’re ready to explore. We’re delighted to have Mandy on board.
